Poppies

Include a poppy or poppies in your writing today.

The little girl in my story, which has been somewhat fictionalised, is myself at seven years of age. We did plant poppies in the school garden and it is a fond memory for me. As a result poppies will always have a special place in my heart...Goldie

‘Hurry up children, we must be finished soon, school is nearly over for today,’ said the teacher. The grade twos were preparing the garden bed at the front of their classroom to plant poppies – Iceland poppies. Some were digging, some were pulling out weeds, and others were raking.

‘Line up quickly, please,’ she called as she started to give each child the tiny seeds. The fair-haired little girl clutched her seeds tightly in her fist while she waited for her turn to plant them. When it came, she knelt in the garden bed and made small holes in the dirt with the tips of her fingers, gently putting each seed inside its hole and covering it with earth.

She stood up, wiped the dirt from her hands and knees with a handkerchief, and watched as a boy called Haydn watered the poppy garden…

Winter passed and spring came. The poppies grew and came into bloom, cups of many colours that swayed in the breezes. The fair-haired little girl skipped by the poppy garden, paused and turned back to admire the flowers. She bent down and stroked an orange petal. ‘You are beautiful,’ she told the poppy. ‘And I will love poppies forever.’

Rapunzel

What little girl
Hasn’t heard
The fairytale
Of Rapunzel

With golden hair
And skin so fair
And a prince to rescue her

But what girl has
Hair that shines like gold
Or that perfect rosy complexion

And what girl has
A prince to save her
To rescue her from the tower

The tower where she waits
Day after day
Night after night

She gazes down
At the forest below
And the sweet spring flowers

The songbirds visit her
And from them
She learns to sing

She gazes out at the world
And waits for her prince
To come for her

The tower’s silence
Is oppressive
Thick, suffocating

And so she sings
To frighten away
The silence

Days pass
Nights pass
And still he does not come

She has grown tired
Of waiting for something,
That may never come

She realizes
She must
Set herself free

Find the strength
To break the rusted lock
On the tower’s rotting door

And climb slowly down
The winding staircase
Choked with spider webs

She must step out
Into the sunlight
Dancing liquid gold

She breathes in the sweet smell
Of the gown of wildflowers
The earth has garbed itself in

She is free
Now and forever
Trapped no more

For she found the strength
To stop waiting
And wondering

She found herself
And realized something
She really knew all along

She needs no prince
To rescue her
From the keep

She needn’t wait for him
A day longer
Than she already had

Why should a prince
Get to save the day
When the princess
Could save herself

Shadows

for more of Kathryn's photography visit -
~
Suggested prompt...
~
Consider the light and dark of this striking image,
consider the idea of shadows and include shadows in your writing today...
literally or figuratively.

________________________

Shadows.

I saw the topic and it stopped me.

After everything. After everything I have gone through. AFTER everything you have gone through.

Shadows.

It has such a negative tone to it. But on a hot day can give such a relief.

Relief.

A shadow on the street under a sun reminds us who we are. We all look the same. No colour, no sex, no religion. You can't tell that from a shadow. Not always.

A shadow can remind you and make you appreciate the good things in life. The sun. The light. Sunny days. Bright days. Positive things.

Everything looks different in shadow. And like problems, the shadows change. They get different forms as the sun moves. As we progress in life. They get a different meaning.

I think the key is to keep our face toward the light and the sun, leave the shadows behind, but at the same time remember who we are and where we came from. And that every single human being on this Earth is the same. Deserves the same. Should be valued as same. It also reminds us that as we all have shadows, so do we have anxieties and tribulations, there's always someone out there that is going through something similar to what you are going through.

We are never alone.

Shadows can be beautiful. You can find beauty in them. As you can from tribulations and anxieties in life. They can give you insight and strenght you would not get otherwise. And one day you will be able to give that insight to someone else.

Gain strenght from weaknesses.

Let your shadow change. And give light and comfort to someone. When you are ready.

Don't forget the shape of your shadow.

Ever.

"There are nights when the wolves are silent and only the moon howls." (George Carlin)

Shutting the book and returning to her desk, she turned the words over in her head as the pencil twirled between her fingertips. On a full moon night such as this, it seemed to be true. The countryside, touched by the moonlight, was still. It was as though the night was holding its breath, waiting, like a bow poised above a stringed instrument, a conductor with his baton raised, the listener perched on the edge of a chair. The cool air was thick with expectation.

Yet no music would sound into the night. Instead, the moon simply paused in the blue-black sky, her light spreading deep into the corners of the night, illuminating loudly the secrets of women working quietly in private chambers. As the silver dial reached the height of its waxing, some blew out candles, some prayed or recited incantations, while others tossed their arms upward to embrace their celestial queen.

Smiling softly, her pencil touched the paper. On such a silent night, when the wolves have lost their voices, the women will sing with the moon.

Consider her inner dialog.

She put the book back on the dust-lined shelf and, as she sat down at the table, inhaled the musty but familiar smell of the old library. She had been coming here since she was a small child and this building had watched her grow in so many ways: picture books, tween paperbacks, teen romance, and adult non-fiction.

She quickly typed the title of the book now shelved and added the author and the ISBN to the spreadsheet on her computer labeled, "To Read Next".

With only a few more minutes before the library closed, she knew she needed to put her things away and check out the stack of books perched on the table beside her.

It was hard for her to leave that night, just like every evening she had spent in the library before this. But, she knew she had to go so she gathered her belongings and made her way to the check-out desk.

She handed the librarian the stack of books she wanted to check-out and passed her a handwritten note.

The note read, "Thank you for working here. I love coming here and, without your efforts, I don't think the library would be the same. I am deaf and cannot hear the conversations and expressed emotions around me. But, in the world of books, I can! I love it when I can "hear" communication in the text. Thank you for making that possible for me."

...and the librarian, with tears welled up in her eyes, reached over the counter and touched the girl's arm and said, "Thank you", hoping that the girl could read lips.

The girl looked into the well-worn eyes of the librarian and nodded her head up and down in agreement.

The girl saw and felt emotion. Maybe she didn't need to "hear" communication after all.

This photo reminds me of the story I was told by my husband; whose father drove the train here in our town for years and years.

Before we were married, we would take long drives admiring nature and the wondrous world around us. One day, we came upon a body of water where there remained half of a railroad bridge. Ray told me that his father broke that bridge....

Apparently, there was a day when his father, driving the train, came to a horrendous stop. The bridge collapsed before them.

The train was not a carrier of passengers, but did carry the workers to each destination. I don't recall whether anyone was hurt or not but I do know my feeling as I looked at that half bridge remaining.

I have this feeling of knee-knocking fear when standing upon a bridge such as this. I can't imagine how his father must have felt that day, or each day there after as he approached these bodies of water on a bridge.

Ode to Childhood

Wiping eyes, sleepless nights
A newborn takes his toll
Cherub grows big, now takes flight
A toddler's mirth is born.

Kid yoga, preschool years all done
And now you're really big
Scorecards full of kid games won
Jumping on just one leg.

Growing learning pre-teen years
Now you know everything
Fights with girls and boys and tears
I don't know anything.

Taller than me, looking down
I nearly recognize myself
Raucous laughter, deep deep frown
Eat life up, my elf.

Flash forward in time from now
Unearthing bright memories in advance
Laugh through judgement, pain and vow
To always take that chance.

The dew is frozen on my window
The frost is crusted along the walk
The lantern's glow above the snow
Is beckoning a happy thought

The robin lights upon the ground
A stroke of red upon his breast
I wonder how the frost must feel
His tiny toes are froze at best

He hops from here to there about
As if to break away the white
His happy dance is filled with glee
Perhaps there's more to his delight

The spring is near, he seems to say
As I wonder at his soft compose
The bite of winter's presence here
Is shown upon my reddening nose

And so I stand upon the step
Outside my wintered walls
Then enter within its warm embrace
And when I peak, the robin calls

"You'll see, you'll see
My human friend
The frost indeed
Is yet to end!"

Being in this spot on the graph may not be all bad, at least for me. I'm reminded from this position that
1. Life is about change (for the good, for the neutral, for the not so good).
2. From this vantage point on the down slope, I can see where I've been and where I might be headed. Might. I'm hopeful that we can shift this curve from the course already plotted.
3. I'm grateful for the opportunity this position gives me to take ownership of my part in this financial mess. Surely most of us have contributed in some way, others in larger ways.
4. I'm also grateful to be reminded that I cannot take luxuries for granted, that they have a price tag. I'm reminded that I need to make thoughtful choices every day about what I purchase, what I can afford, what are needs and what are wants. This cannot be anything but a blessing in my life.
5. I've learned that I can live happily with much less; that comfort is less about things and more about experiences (and not just wildly expensive experiences like some types of travel). I have not purchased anything I don't really need for the last month and it has been easy. I've also turned down the heat and worn more clothes inside the house to keep warm.
6. Let's stand in this place on the down slope and remember why we are here and what things we can do to turn this around. Each person. Each day. Each decision. It all matters.

1994 in the Central African Republic. Our team of sociolinguistic surveyors arrived in a remote village planning to do a group interview on language use. We were told that the men were all out in the field drinking palm wine. So we had to wait for the next day. In the late afternoon the other female team member and I got the crazy idea to cook a local dish - Gozo (manioc/cassava foufou). Our guide organized all the necessities - Manioc flour, stones for a stove, fire wood, a sieve, a large cooking pot, and a large wooden spoon. We did not need to pound the flour, but we nearly forgot to sieve it. We had quite a few spectators - two white women cooking on an open fire? Most village women had never seen a white person before. Can white women cook? They did not think so. When the Foufou was nearly ready, we decided to open two tins of lentil soup to accompany it, instead of a local sauce that would have taken several hours to prepare. Suddenly we had the even crazier idea to invite the village chief (who was present and not drinking palm wine) to eat with us. In an African context a very normal matter of politeness and hospitality - except when you are not even sure how your meal will turn out. To our own surprise he accepted. So our team, our guide and the village chief sat down together and ate as is normal there - from one big bowl with our hands. It tasted quite good but the lentil soup must have been unusual for the village chief.

The next day in the morning we were finally ready to start our group interview. The village chief gave a moving introduction speech concluding it with the words: "Formerly white people came and treated us like monkeys. Today another type of white people has come. They are white people with whom we can put our hands in the same bowl (which is an important sign of friendship)." We were all deeply touched.

In this darkness tinged with fear?

Start the meter, throttle down
Let’s get set to leave this town.
Turn the corner; don’t look back
Dim the light on your roof rack.

Skyline fading far behind,
Out of sight and out of mind,
Contentment is the place to be
So much more for us to see.

Taxi, taxi, headlights bright
In the city deep of night,
Transmission shifting into drive
Take me somewhere more alive.

(Apologies to Blake)

Be inspired and create a piece of writing for her.

Imperfect! Rough! Uncompleted!
Hair contorting in the breeze!
Limbs twisting like gnarled branches!
Ugly trunk with no knees!

Hideous face, marred like bark!
Bulbous breasts disfigured!
Not fit for vulture (let alone lark)!
No! beaver won't even gnaw you!

Fire skirts your very presence!
Repulsed by your rigidity!
Soil only holds you aloft
to rid itself of your putridity!

Lumberjack, taken aback
by the sight of your unwholesomeness!
Refuses with his axe to hack
at your twisted wooden mess!

But I endeavor to love you still!
Until infinity, my love will endure.
How can I spurn gift from her,
Whom we know as Mother Nature?

For with every woman reaching
for a heart which they can keep,
the gist of what the sages are teaching
is that beauty is just skin deep!

So look past the gruesome mask,
and find that which lies within!
For happiness is accepting
no matter the wrapping, my friend!

Suggested Prompt...

Offer in your writing today a creative hint about why
you are looking up at this building.
A story about a job interview, a poem about the lover who is up there,
a story from the perspective of the hot dog vendor there in front.
However, whatever.

Now she sits on the curb
her face just as pale and gray as the city
that surrounds her

she glances up towards the neon ads
through the snow white petals
which fall on her hair
staring blankly through the yellow flashes
which quickly pass her by

and the dimly decorated people
without a glance to her slouched body
which sat on the dirty pavement
and stared
and reminded herself

this is not how i planned myself
so many years ago
she lost everything she ever had
even her mind and her dreams were taken

now she sits alone,
staring past the pale red awning
of the cart selling pretzels
then something catches her eye through the rushing cars

an orange peel
which had been blown to the gutter
opposite her
and it rocked in the gentle wind
waving at her
teasing her under the windows of the dimming buildings

a discarded orange peel
just as useless and insignificant as she
abandoned and trapped in the womb of this dark city
she felt a silent sense of harmony
with the object

and then the wind changed
and the orange peel turned
it rushed through the traffic to greet her worn shoe
where it sat
and rocked,
patting her comfortingly

and after she smiled down at it
she looked past the colorful city
to the sky
as she wondered to herself
since when did poetry
have to rhyme?

Use this wonderful art to inspire your writing today.
It makes me think of the Emily Dickenson poem...
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

Project your song

Stretch your soul

Exercise your voice

Perhaps something about the moutains, or the magic of song,
or simply use the image creatively as you are inspired.

How quiet the mountains sit

Their majesty bows down,
as the brotherhood
of musicians spiral
their song upward,

Walk down this path on the moutain's top edge,
look out at the horizons all around you. Write of what you see.

As I am standing at this crossroads, I look to my left and I see endless possibilities, a landscape stretching out as far as I can see. A familiar sight to me, less risk and more of a chance to succeed in my quest. As I look to the right, I see the unending expanse of the oceans. For me an unfamiliar challenge. More risk, less of a chance to fulfill my dreams. However if I take the ocean as my new path, I will see wonders I have never seen, leading me to new, uncharted waters, new relationships, new life experiences. My path taken at this crossroads will be to the right...looking for oceans end...more risk but a much deeper, rewarding renewal of spirit. I'll write and let you know what I find.

Anesidora's heart was full of a fire and passion the world would never know. For her father was Stone and her mother was Ice and her genes predetermined the sunken face in her mirror. Her hair was white, her lips a deep lapis and her stare could freeze your blood. It was rumored that an unfortunate courtier had once brushed her flesh in passing and his heart stopped mid-beat.

Ane's days were lonely and long. No one had heard the alabaster princess speak in over a decade and so the villagers began whispering of a mute beauty who lived in a castle of ice...

If only the people could hear her singing behind those walls. Were they truly composed of snow and crystal, the walls would melt. Her voice was her fire, her words were of Spring and Anesidora was the key to the lush green fields and plentiful flora of the land.

The only price was her solitude. The only oath was her secrecy... so...

shhh...
tell no one.

We were so very privileged to share with Leah this day posting each other's blogs and finding new friends to create with. Thank you to all the artists and writers for expressing their creativity.

L - Sunday's Alphabet Prompt

L is for Love
~
Suggested prompt...
~
Write a love letter or love poem that you wish you would have gotten.
All prompts beneath the photos are only suggestions.
You are free to use the photo to be inspired to write any way you desire.

Dear Paul,

You know that thing you should do? Don't worry about it. It's done. And that thing you should have done but didn't. Forget about it, it wasn't that important really. Oh, and all the other things that you never got round to-like saying I love you? Ah, who cares. It's enough that you're here. Sometimes.

With Love,
X

~
Paul Brazill

There were some great offerings to this unique take on a love letter, but Paul's made me laugh and think. It is probably a letter a lot of men want to get. Ok... off to write Hubby's Valentines card now.
